Good morning, Washington. In general we steer clear from too many photos of the monuments, but we couldn’t resist dropping in this gorgeous photo of the Jefferson Memorial at dawn posted to DCist Photos by Flickr user guy_incognito. Today it will remain sunny yet temperatures will drop significantly and highs today will only reach the low 60s.
More Stadium Intrigue: In yet another twist in the already complex story of of the new D.C. baseball stadium, rising construction estimates mean city officials are re-evaluating some of the stadium’s planned features, including underground parking and retail on the stadium site. The Post reports D.C. Council Chairman Linda W. Cropp explained the situation this way: “We’ll have to reduce some things and not be able to do a Cadillac stadium, but we could do a Buick or a Ford.” To which David Catania replied “If we want a Buick, we have one — it’s called RFK.” We wonder — What would a Honda stadium look like?
Panel Recommends Toll Lanes: An advisory panel has recommended Virginia allow with a private company construct high-occupancy toll lanes on I-95 from the 14th Street bridge to nearly 50 miles from D.C., the Post reports. Under proposals currently discussed, the lanes would be free for carpools of 3 or more, but others would pay whatever toll was needed to keep the lane moving. As in June, when we wrote about this last, slugs have continued to oppose the plan, afraid it will eventually spell the end of the ride sharing tradition, putting tens of thousands of additional cars on the road.
Metro Board to Consider Removing Handrails: This Thursday the WMATA board will vote on a proposal to experiment with cars with up to 16 seats removed and the floor-to-ceiling bars located near the doors removed and other hand rails added, the AP via NBC4 reports. You may remember WMATA has been tossing around ideas to re-configure cars to increase capacity since January. WMATA engineers hope the changes will encourage people to stand towards the center of rail cars, and eliminate bottlenecks entering and exiting trains.
