It was only a few months back that American University was the center of a local media storm, awash in allegations concerning the spending habits of its president, Benjamin Ladner. Accused of living large on more than $500,000 worth of university funds, Ladner was eventually fired, though not without a generous $3.75 million severance package. Things have quieted down some at the Northwest campus since then, even though a Senate committee has launched an investigation into Ladner’s severance.

Yesterday the Examiner brought us a much-needed Ladner update. It seems that the deposed president is still living in the university’s well-appointed mansion, fully using up the 90 days he was given to vacate the premises (with, of course, $20,000 worth of moving costs fully covered). Ladner isn’t hitting up Craigslist for new digs, mind you — he and his wife own a home on Gibson Island, an exclusive enclave in Anne Arundel County.

Our question is this: what next? What does a disgraced former university president do for employment these days? You’d think the man got used to some of the AU perks, so he’s not about to become a barista at Starbucks or teller at Barnes & Noble. The again, we’d like to think whatever it is probably won’t include an expense account — Ladner has clearly abused that privilege. Maybe something basic — an administrative position? Teaching? The non-profit sector?

You’ll do fine, Ben. Just don’t expect to throw any more $5,000 lunches for your wife’s garden club, or for anyone to write checks on your behalf for $220,000 in chef services.
