It being Super Bowl Sunday, there weren’t many people too concerned with college basketball yesterday, but those who were saw Georgetown continue its outstanding season with a 61-58 defeat of No. 9 Pittsburgh.

The game had a strange texture to it. Georgetown won despite a minus-12 rebounding margin and just two points from the bench. The Hoyas found themselves trailing 33-18 before closing the first half on a 10-2 run that trimmed the deficit to 35-28 heading into the break. Coach John Thompson III then ordered a matchup zone to counter Pittsburgh center Aaron Gray, who had scored 15 points in the first 20 minutes. Gray went scoreless the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Georgetown steadily pulled away behind Jeff Green, who tied a career-best with 22 points, and Brandon Bowman, who notched 10 of his 15 points in the second stanza. Those two helped the Hoyas to a seemingly safe 10-point lead with 39 seconds to play. But they nearly blew it, as Pittsburgh’s Ronald Ramon had a good look at a three-pointer that would have sent the game into overtime. It didn’t go down, however, and Georgetown (16-4, 7-2 in the Big East) now has a six-game winning streak and is in fourth place in the conference. Georgetown hosts St. John’s Thursday before next Monday’s showdown with conference leader West Virginia.
