We’ve mentioned it before, but in case you missed it, Fusebox is closing its doors, and they have indeed announced a closing reception: It’s this Saturday, Feb. 11 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sarah and Patrick would like to invite everyone to come and drink a toast to five years of great art. Other gallery owners no doubt are also encouraged to attend and poach their now homeless roster of artists. See you all there.

>>I finally got to check out the latest show up at Irvine contemporary, and it’s definitely worth a look before it closes on Saturday, Feb. 11. Bede Murphy’s Name Dropper Series, 7 is pictured left, and is pretty representative of most of his work in this show — a kind of collage-as-painting ethic with a generous helping of visceral text that’s worth taking the time to get up close and read. Jason Zimmerman’s deadpan photos add a nice counterpoint to the back room; his empty spaces say nearly as much as Murphy’s swirling musings.

>>There will be an opening reception at the Gateway Heliport Gallery (8001 Kennett St., Silver Spring) for a sort of semi-outsider juried competition made up of 13 Art-o-matic participants from last year with no previous gallery experience. Friday, Feb. 10th, 6 p.m. Somehow we doubt Blake Gopnik will be there. Local gallery owner Nevin Kelly will serve as a guest juror.

>>The DCAC will host the last of its 4-part panel series, moderated by Ian Jehle, on the topic of “Who Do You Love?”, artists discussing their major influences. The topic this time around will be site-specific installations, and include panelists Mary Coble, Jayme McLellan, and Ira Tattelman. This Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.

>>Gallery Neptune in Bethesda will open a Valentine’s-themed show called Cupidity, in which an assortment of artists (including Alexandra Silverthorne, Dana Ellyn Kaufman and PostSecret guru Frank Warren) create works inspired by newspaper personal ads. Sunday, Feb. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. No fatties.
