Today we received an email from something we never thought existed — a humble politician. It read:
I am running for mayor of DC, on the Green Party ticket. I filed with the DC board of elections last Friday. So far no one has noticed and I am generally shy and having difficulty accepting that I need to draw attention to myself if I am to go anywhere with this. So here I am.
And it was as such the we were introduced to the sixth mayoral candidate for the 2006 race, David John Bloem, running for the Green Party D.C. Statehood Green Party. A 36-year-old program director and DJ, Bloem writes on his website:
I have chosen to run as a Green Party candidate as I do not feel either major party represents me. As a disenfranchised citizen of the United States, that sentiment is amplified. Right now, I enjoy a fairly easy, anonymous life. I’m pretty sure that is over. I know that my decisions exchange those qualities for others I have yet to appreciate. But I am optimistic. I know I can count on friends and family, I have a lot of both. And I have faith.
We hope his faith and humility are not destroyed by what is shaping up to be the most expensive mayoral contest in District history, with $2.3 million already having been raised by the five current candidates.
Good luck, Mr. Bloem.
