The Post identifies an interesting criminal trend in the District: church robbing. Perhaps not as lucrative as banks or liquor stores, churches still present inviting targets, particularly as security tends to be much more relaxed than in other places of business. Thieves have gotten away with computers and other electronics (including a vacuum cleaner) and with wallets and credit cards. According to the Post, 12 Northwest churches have been robbed in the past two months.
Nationals, For Now: I do think it would have been a blessing of sorts had the dispute over the Nationals merchandise rights led to a new choice (Grays) for the club’s name. It’s no longer an issue, however, as the Examiner today reports that MLB and Bygone Sports have settled their lawsuit. The Examiner has Team President Tony Tavares saying, “Everyone thought it was going to come down to money. I’m not sure that ended up being the case here,” which leads us to wonder what, exactly Bygone got. Could have been, I suppose, free merch for life or tickets, or maybe the Nats will be playing at Bygone Field come 2008.
Change On Its Way for Concrete City: The Examiner is also reporting that Crystal City property owners have petitioned the Arlington County Board for a tax increase, applying to CC businesses only, that would fund an area business improvement district. It’s estimated that a BID would contribute around $10 million to the area over five years, in an attempt to, “transform Crystal City into Arlington’s best downtown area,” which makes us think the money will be used to knock down buildings on the Orange Line corridor. Actually, one development director said that, “the money could be used to put up attractive signs around the city that would help visitors navigate the area more easily.” Sounds like a sure thing to me.
Briefly Noted: Wilson Bridge project, or at least one phase of it, should be done soon…Laura Bush jealous of Condi’s physique…Somehow, I don’t think this is going to happen…And boy is it windy.
