Saturday night’s season ending game for the Wizards played out true to form. Build up a big lead (check – up double digits in the first half), lose it in the second (check – down three late), get some game saving heroics from Agent Zero (Check – an incredible three pointer from over 30 feet out) and then ultimately lose it due to their defense (a wide open Damon Jones three pointer with three seonds left in OT). It’s bad enough to let LeBron James make plays in the clutch that enable the Cavs to win their third close game in this series, but to let Damon Jones beat you is inconprehensible. Up until his game winning basket in Game 6, Jones had played all of 24 minutes in the series and was 2 of 4 from the field.

And then there’s Gilbert, our beloved Agent Zero, who had his second game in this series where he went from hero to goat in under a few seconds. Missing those free throws late should never happen to someone that shoots over 80% from the line, but to let LeBron psyche him out while he was there was very un-Gilbert-like. Arenas generally thrives in that situation, but not this time. But Agent Zero will undoubtedly use this as motivation for next year. He’s probably at the Phone Booth right now shooting free throws and jumpers.

So where do the Wiz go from here? That’s up to President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld. Hopefully he spends his summer finding the team a low post presence and some general bench depth. How about trading Jarvis Hayes for Mike Sweetney? It won’t put the Wiz over the top, but if local product Sweetney can ever put down the Twinkies, he’d be a step in the right direction. Jared Jeffries will be a restricted free agent this summer, and he provides some nice intangibles for the team and doesn’t need the ball in the offense, but another team will likely overpay for him (Isiah Thomas says “Hi”), although the Wiz will have the rights to match any offer. Head Coach Eddie Jordan is also due for an extension, Gilbert has already said “Bring Eddie back or else,” and he’s led this formerly moribund franchise to the playoffs two years running, so look for this to be nothing more than a formality.
