If you’re going to spend $611 million, what’s another $750,000? Chump change, or so seems to think D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams.
D.C. Wire is reporting that this morning, Williams proposed the creation of a new Office of Baseball. Cost — $750,000. Purpose — According to a Williams, coordinating between the various entities overseeing the stadium’s construction and the area’s development. Stated Williams:
The purpose of the Office is to assist and advise the Mayor in the review, planning, coordination and oversight of the construction and development of the new ballpark and the surrounding mixed use district and to coordination [sic] the development activities on the ballpark site and in the surrounding area among the affected District agencies and instrumentalities in order to maximize the benefits of the public investment in the stadium complex.
Essentially, this new Office of Baseball will serve to mediate conflicts between the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission, the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation, and the Lerner family.
Of course, pushing this new layer of bureaucracy through the D.C. Council might be a challenge, given its exhaustion with all things baseball — especially when it comes to doling out more money. The idea seems solid, though. If you’re going to start from scratch and re-design an entire section of the city, you may as well do it right.
