The world’s most popular sporting event, soccer’s World Cup, gets underway tomorrow in Germany. Unlike 2002 when matches took place in the wee hours, this year’s start from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern time, meaning it’s a lot easier to hit a bar or two and watch a game. Some DC area bars and restaurants are opening early for the fans, including Pour House on Capitol Hill, Lucky Bar in Dupont, and Fado in Chinatown, which start serving beer at 9 AM on game days. Other bars will be showing the matches on tape delay in the evening, such as Temperance Hall in Petworth, and others will be showing weekend games, like Galaxy Hut in Clarendon.

And for those not looking to mix booze and work, try the soccer-themed 90 Min Cafe coffee shop in Adams Morgan or national establishments – the Alliance Francaise for French-speaking countires, Goethe Institut for Germany, and various African, Irish, and Latin American bars and restaurants around the metro area.

We suspect Bar Pilar will do something as well, since they already host English Premier League brunches. And there’s always ESPN Zone. For a list of places to watch, check out the Post’s city guide. And be ready to see coworkers take long “business” lunches on the 12th, when the USA plays the Czech Republic at noon.
