Trotting over to our inbox on free-ranging feet the other day came an invitation for media and invited guests from Equinox: join us for a blind taste test of Certified Humane products next Thursday, June 29.
Featured products include Giving Nature Eggs, Mosner Veal, Touchstone Lamb, Meyer Beef, and Murray’s Chicken, all of which will be represented by a live person to discuss how the products are handled. Sounds delicious, but something’s missing — our seafood. Where, oh where, we wondered, are the advocates for humanely raised and handled lobsters and soft-shell crabs?
If you have literally been living under a rock, you may have escaped hearing about the controversy Whole Foods stirred up recently over man’s inhumanity to invertebrates. First, the venerable chain banned the sale of live softshell crabs after customers complained that they got squeamish watching workers cut up and clean the live crabs for other customers. Then, the gourmet giant decided lobsters looked a little too unhappy swimming around in their tanks, and couldn’t vouch for their previous whereabouts, so it banned them, too.
