With Mother Nature tossing lightning and thunder, space shuttle Discovery shooting across the Florida sky, and the pyrotechnics on the National Mall, the Nats’ little matinee date with the Marlins was easy to overlook yesterday. Only 23,000 showed up for the game between NL East also-rans played under threatening skies.

But rookie RBI machine Ryan Zimmerman would have none of it. He launched some fireworks of his own with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th to secure the 6-4 win, the Nats’ fourth straight. Amazingly, three of the Nats last five wins at RFK have come by walk-off homer, including Zimmerman’s last one against the Yankees.

Yesterday, John Patterson continued his slow return from injury, going five innings and giving up two runs. He only threw 67 pitches, owing to the swampy midday conditions and the “dead arm” he’s experienced since his last start in Toronto. His day was long done by the time Cordero recorded the last four outs and got the win on Zimmerman’s blast.
