When Butterstick’s official name was to be chosen, the National Zoo put the decision in the hands of us, the normal folk. Now they’re looking to do the same with the three newest additions to the zoo’s stock — the tiger cubs.

The National Zoo has opened online voting for the three cubs — one male and two females — that were born on May 24. The voting will remain open until August 21, and the winners will be announced once the cubs are formally presented to the public, most likely in early September. For the male, the choices are Jati, Bejo, or Guntur; for the first female, they are Kamboja, Maharani, or Mawar; and for the second female they are Kemala, Melati, or Ndari.

And much like with Butterstick, whose official title, Tai Shan, means “peaceful mountain,” each of the options invokes something natural and peaceful. These are tigers, zookeepers — make them sound a little more like the blood-thirsty killers we’d like them to be. We’d rather they be known as Nduli (Swahili for “killer”), Shenzi (Swahili for “savage”), and Kikomba Cha Njaa (Swahili for “Ravenous Hunger”). Those are our votes.
