August is notoriously a dead month for theatregoers. Truth be told, we’re glad to take a breather after wearing ourselves out during the first Capital Fringe Festival. But we still can’t wait until September, which marks the start of so many companies’ seasons. In the meantime, there are a few shows to tide you over.
>>Kennedy Center spends the summer months highlighting the talent of teens, with their workshop production of Muzical! showcased by Cappies National Theatre (Aug 7).
>>The National Tour of Evita left us lukewarm in December. We’ll see if we’re more wowed with Open Circle Theater’s production. The troupe specializes in highlighting actors with disabilities (Aug 9).
>>Check out what’s going on with all the females in Oedipus’ life during Natural Theatricals’ production of Phoenician Women (Aug. 10).
>>Who says you have to sit through an entire mass? Theatre Alliance’s 3/4 of a Mass For St. Vivian focuses on the friendship between two women, and impressively, is an offering from a 17-year-old playwright. (Aug. 10).
>>Obsessive fans of “South Park”‘s Trey Parker and Matt Stone have undoubtedly already unearthed the soundtrack to Cannibal! The Musical, which they wrote early in their career. Landless Theatre Company will bring those singing and dancing corpse-eaters to life (Aug. 25).
>>Apparently Olney Theatre is not the only Ibsen-obsessed place around; Shakespeare Theatre will have its own production of Enemy of The People at the close of the month (Aug. 29).
