Things are looking a little down for mainstream sports in the district. The Nats are cellar-dwelling. Our two favorite eccentric stars are sidelined. We can always count on DC United to keep our spirits up, but their success only nudges the District’s collective batting average above the Mendoza line. With this in mind, we’re eagerly looking beyond coverage of sport’s established powers.
Fresh off of their most successful season ever, the Washington Renegades men’s rugby team is looking to take the pitch for another year of hard-hitting action. Their members comprise a highly diversified group dedicated both to playing some solid rugby and providing opportunities to socialize. For those looking to get in on the action, the Renegades are holding a recruiting session tonight at Rhino (7-9 p.m.). They are looking for rookies and veteran ruggers. The team is hoping happy hour prices, pizza, and wings will lure potential recruits. For those that can’t make tonight’s recruitment session, the team holds regular practices at Stead Park, 17th and P, NW from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The DC Rollergirls are also looking to make an impact in the Washington area. Recently featured in OnTap, the Rollergirls are currently barnstorming their way through a series of preseason promotions. They’ll be taking their show to Dr. Dremo’s on Saturday, August 26th for a night of debauchery. The night should feature some diversified fun; if you’re not into the drinking and dancing, you can always spin the Wheel of Doom (?), or “enjoy the spanking booth”.
