This graffiti’s sentiment notwithstanding, today the Democratic voters of the city will express their concerns and hopes for the city through their ballots, and, in the process, likely determine what most of the city’s government will look like for the next few years. Redskins Fall To Vikings: You probably don’t need to be told, but we’ll say it anyway. Last night the Redskins lost to the Minnesota Vikings in their season-opening game, after John Hall failed to make a potentially game-tieing 48-yard field goal. It was a close game against a mostly-unremarkable opponent, making it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions — or maybe we just don’t want to. Either way, hopefully the team will fare better next week against the hated Cowboys.
Eviction Companies Accused of Exploiting Homeless: We missed this one yesterday, but the Washington Times does a fine job following up on a story that originally appeared in Street Sense in April. Some D.C. companies specializing in performing evictions stand accused of using the homeless to serve their contracts. That’s a bit ironic, but not fundamentally wrong. The alleged malfeasance lies in rates that they pay, which can apparently be as low as $2 per hour. Six companies now face a federal class action lawsuit.
Va. Keeps Alcohol Restrictions: WJLA reports bad news for Virginia’s one-stop sangria shoppers. The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals has rules that the commonwealth’s restrictions on selling out-of-state wines in its ABC stores are constitutional after all. A restriction on bringing more than a gallon of booze per person into the state was also upheld.

This Day In DCist: One year ago today we celebrated a different Redskins victory, talked about a delicious Katrina benefit and reviewed Idlewild’s performance at the Black Cat.
