Post to Employees: Meh.

After the Fenty fever of this week, we were certain that our non-ironic viewing of The Today Show would at last not be interrupted by political smear campaigns. But lo, it was not to be. The Communications Workers of America are stepping up their attacks claiming The Washington Post has denied them raises for over 4 years and that they have been working without a contract since 2003. Along with their new Web site WashingtonPostUnfair.com, they’ve also decided to go with racially and historically-charged TV spots. The newest television ad compares their struggle to that of …wait for it…. wait for it… Rosa Parks! I mean come on, give the lady a break. Just because Outkast can use it, doesn’t mean you should.

Apparently this isn’t CWA’s first media foray. As we wrote at the time, bus ads ran in April, 2005. But a new resolution by the group released in August is kicking up the adjectives to “draconian and union-busting proposals”. While it’s absolutely true mail workers at the Post have reasons to complain, they’re not alone among the unionized workers in other media outlets. WJLA/NewsChannel 8 has been under pressure from their union for months — just without all the race-based rancor.

A search of washingtonpost.com yields no results for CWA or Communications Workers of America. Does the Post even know they’re being compared to the oppression of the segregated South? Or do they just not care?
