This photo taken by Flickr user andertho caught my eye immediately for its sense of motion and composition, with the repeated stairwell lines, as well as the graininess that adds to the candidness of the scene. What I found almost more interesting was the link by a few of the commenters, who noted that it reminded them of another photo that was overwhelmingly voted by users out of one of the many Flickr DeleteMe groups.

Turns out that photo was by famed photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson and was submitted by a Flickr user to test the knowledge and sensibilities of his fellow photographers in the group. While a few recognized the photo, they stayed silent while most others insisted the photo was badly composed and of poor quality. When the secret was revealed (after it was voted down by the group), a lengthy discussion ensued over the nature of photography as art, and whether the DeleteMe voters were full of uneducated opinions or if the photo was merely famous because it was Cartier-Bresson’s, and not because it was actually good. Read it and weigh-in with your own opinion here.
