For the casual fan, yesterday’s Washington v. Jacksonville tilt was a Sunday afternoon classic, replete with offensive pyrotechnics, lead changes, great individual performances, and down-to-the-wire intensity. For Redskins fans, however, it was a stomach-tightening affair in which the script flipped wildly between what seemed like certain victory and certain defeat. Relief finally came scant minutes into the overtime period, when Redskin wideout Santana Moss grabbed a pinpoint pass in traffic and took it to the end zone for a 36-30 win.

As the offense struggled during the first two games of the season, it often seemed as if Moss was the forgotten man in the game plan. Yesterday, however, he reminded everyone as to why he’s been such a key acquisition. DCist has paid particular attention to Moss’ overall field sense before, he has an uncanny way of obtaining the ball so that when he receives it, he’s already positioned himself to escape his closest defender. His devastating first step was on display yesterday as he snared three touchdown catches, two of which were beautiful examples of his singular elusiveness. More than anything else, the offseason decision to load up on wideouts was done to provide Moss with better opportunities, and for at least one on Sunday, that decision paid off handsomely.
