We’ve mentioned our respect and admiration for Dan Steinberg and his wonderful D.C. Sports Bog in this space before. Dan’s a fantastic, knowledgeable writer with a flair for great, off-beat stories that surround the events he’s covering and quite frankly, if you’re not reading his blog, you’re missing out. That said, our respect for him has grown even more this week after his seemingly wacky idea to get as many area Caps fans out to RFK on Sunday to take in the United v. NY Red Bulls playoff match. His reasoning? Both teams have a lot in common:

You think the Washington Post undercovers your team, you occasionally read my blog, you like alcohol, you don’t like teams from New York.

Obviously, as big United fans ourselves, this is something DCist can get behind. The best part is that it seems the Caps front office is listening. Steinberg wrote today that he received an email from Caps owner Ted Leonsis saying Leonsis intends to reach out to United in an effort to see what kind of cross-marketing platform they can set up. Hard to argue with those results.

But you don’t have to be a United or Caps fan to have fun at RFK this weekend. The Redskins are off, as are the Caps and Wizards. So come out, make some new friends during tailgating and support the winningest local franchise in the last 10 years. Lets all just hope the results are as good as Ghostface Observatory.
