We’ll have to check our calendars, but apparently this is official Teachers Go Crazy Week in D.C. Public Schools. Wednesday morning Shawn Hearn, principal at Eastern High School, was arrested after fighting with a student. Police say there was an altercation between Hearn and two students that quickly turned physical. Hearn and one teenager were charged with assault and released.
Then NBC4 reported on another adult/student fracas in their 11 p.m. broadcast. A 15-year-old student at Roosevelt High alleges that a substitute teacher assaulted him on Tuesday. He suffered a torn tendon in his hand and other bruises. School officials confirmed that there was an incident, but wouldn’t comment further.
To be clear, most educators are overworked, underpaid professionals doing their best in the District’s struggling school system. These two should not be allowed in their ranks.
The school board needs to come clean about the facts in each case quickly and fully. Hearn has been placed on administrative leave, but this clearly doesn’t go far enough. If a student attacks a teacher, they face almost certain expulsion. Why should there be a double standard for those adults paid to ensure a safe learning environment? The incident at Roosevelt made it to the top of the evening news on Wednesday but officials couldn’t even say that they were investigating? Maybe they’re just too busy fretting over Fenty’s anticipated school crackdown.
