It’s safe to say that Pleaseeasaur is unlike most other musical acts. JP Hasson performs jingles for fake companies (“Pizza Brothers and Sons, Inc.”) and goofy songs (“Warning: These Cobras Are Totally Cool”) in front of a plain white screen, wearing a different costume for each, while “projectionist/costume designer/multimedia extraordinaire” Thomas Hurley III puts images on the screens using an overhead projector cued to the music and occasionally holds up cardboard cutouts. If it sounds weird, it is – it’s also hilarious.

The small crowd at the Black Cat’s backstage on Monday seemed mildly perplexed as Hasson hit the stage (despite this being his third time playing the at the Cat) in a superhero costume backed by a goofy keyboard and drum machine, but the performance soon replaced the confusion with enjoyment. All enthusiasm, Hasson stripped off a layer of costume for each song — down to a tuxedo with a cape for “No Prob Limo” then the tux and a wig for “Action City News” (with a spot-on cheesy TV news theme), and finally a leotard for a workout video. For his next costume changes, Hasson would run behind the screen and come out in another get up, dressed as things like a judge or a yeti.
