Does this mean we’re a real city now? The Washington Post reports some fantastic news today — they’re teaming up with The Onion to provide free print versions of America’s Finest News Source in news boxes and by newspaper sellers around D.C. starting in April.
Washington will be The Onion’s 10th city for paper distribution. The Onion, self-described as “America’s Finest News Source,” claims a national print circulation of 599,000. It says 67 percent of its Web site viewers are between 18 and 44 years old.
“We believe that The Onion will be very well-received among young Washingtonians, and this is a very attractive opportunity for us to provide our advertisers with a new and unique way to reach that attractive young audience,” said Christopher Ma, Post Co. vice president in charge of business development.
As excited as we are about the news, we can’t help wondering how it’s being received at City Paper HQ. There are ways in which The Onion can’t compete, of course — the CP’s fine local arts coverage and Loose Lips column (nothing less than an essential part of the democratic process in D.C.) will be unaffected. But given the CP’s hit or miss feature content, a number of overlapping syndicated offerings and a redundant, nationally-oriented and frankly outclassed music section, The Onion offers reasons for not picking up the City Paper that aren’t just related to how much you can comfortably carry on the Metro.
But hey, competition’s good for everybody, right? So we’ll just say, woohoo! Something else awesome to read on our commute — nothing wrong with that.
