Was that Jane Fonda getting a non-fat half-caff soy latte at Starbucks last night? Or Tim Robbins facing off with a beleaguered Hertz employee over their lack of hybrid rentals? Probably not, but they, along with a litany of other Hollywood-types are in town for an anti-war rally set to descend on the Mall Saturday afternoon. They’ll be joined by tens of thousands of protesters from all over the country. On the coattails of the President’s decision to ramp up troop levels in Iraq, the coalition of anti-war groups, including MoveOn.org, CodePink and Iraq Veterans Against the War, is demanding an immediate troop withdrawal.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, the protesters will organize on the Mall between 3rd and 7th Sts., then walk north on Louisiana Ave. to Union Station, and south on Delaware Ave. to the Capitol. Those streets will be closed for the march and Madison and Jefferson Avenues will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. While organizers are urging people to use the Metro to get downtown, they may be a little delayed by planned maintenance on the Blue, Yellow and Green lines.

If this morning’s frostbitey temps are any indication, those planning to attend to should bundle up, although their fiery indignation should help them stay warm. United for Peace and Justice, the blanket group organizing the event also has a helpful list of appropriate noisemakers to bring along. Pots, pans and plastic tubes are encouraged, and a note that “drum sticks for drumming are OK,” is included. Whew, we were worried.
