If this piddling little excuse for a snowstorm keeps you indoors this evening, maybe you don’t deserve to go meet the crew of Road to Roubaix tonight at Warehouse for the film’s fundraiser. The century old road race is no Tour de France with its fancy paved streets and three weeks to make up for break-downs and falls. No, the one day Paris-Roubaix is for the hard core cyclists who like their jaws ringing like a tuning fork after 160 miles of vicious cobblestones and often torturous mid-April storms.
You’ll be able to see a preview of this documentary tonight and decide if it’s up for the battle against A Sunday in Hell as one of the best cyclist movies ever made. The loquacious Peter Nye will be on hand to speak about the historic race and the film’s role.
More importantly, you might win some ridiculously awesome stuff. We know there are some serious cycling buffs in this town, so you might want to make your way over to Warehouse if only for the door prizes. They’ll also be holding a silent auction for two large, and very intense, photographic portraits of Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis, some rare, autographed cycling posters, not to mention a whole slew of other items straight out of a fanatics collection. This writer was lucky enough to be at Warehouse last night while they were hanging David Deal’s photographs in the cafe (one is pictured above) — his awe-inspiring road race shots would make even the biggest couch potato dust off the old Huffy for a loop around the block. The event itself is free (and there’s free booze! Editors Note: Oops, “will be served” does not mean “free.” My apologies!) so catch it at Warehouse tonight, 7 to 9 p.m.
