>> The Corcoran is the place to be for art this weekend when they open the mammoth exhibit Modernism: Designing a New World, 1914-1939 on Saturday. The show will appeal to more than straight-up art lovers — wannabe urban planners (we know we’ve got some of those around here) will find a survey of industrial architecture; politicos can engage in an examination of the era’s struggle for national identity; fashionistas can check out the styles in clothing and furniture that dominated the time. The exhibition is on tour from London, and our inside sources tell us it’s so huge it can’t possibly be seen in one day, so make a weekend out of it, or be sure to stop back before it closes on July 29. See the Corcoran’s web site for ticket information.
>> Speaking of massive art collections, Artomatic has its engines on full throttle. They’ve secured a venue at Old Patent Office Building in Crystal City for April 13 through May 20, 2007. Registration is open, so hit their web site now to sign up and get all the info.
>> With the warm weather, we know there are swarms of you about to descend on the streets, camera in hand. The Washington School of Photography understands that not everyone can live in a darkroom, so they’re offering plenty of outdoor classes, including nature and portratiture classes. While you’re perusing the web site, check out their calls for entries for their upcoming shows. Was DCist Exposed just the first step? You bet it was.
>> Free tonight? Stop by the Nevin Kelly Gallery on U Street NW for an exhibit that features, quite literally, Women’s Work. Five artists show off their very different painting styles, from Mary Chiaramonte’s gripping mixed-media works, to eighteen-year-old Jenny Davis’ watercolor portriats. The opening reception is 6 to 9 p.m.
