Georgetown’s Late Dominance Earns Trip to Atlanta
With six minutes remaining in regulation, the Georgetown Hoyas stared at a nine-point deficit. They were going to have to step up their play if they were to reach the Final Four, and do so against the highest caliber of opponent. The Hoyas did just that. They rallied to force overtime and took control in the extra period to come away with a 96-84 victory.
The Hoyas’ staunch defense was aided by UNC’s poor shot selection, resulting in the Tar Heels shooting 1-23 in the final 15 minutes of play. Down the stretch, the Hoyas’ starters added valuable contributions, but Roy HIbbert’s dunk with 4:22 remaining in the second half provided the biggest momentum boost. The biggest shot belonged to guard Jonathan Wallace, who hit the trey that sent the Hoyas into overtime. The short break between periods did little to slow Georgetown’s momentum. By the time Carolina finally hit a shot in the overtime period, the Hoyas had already scored 14 points, clinching the win.
GW Women Succumb Early
Just hours after a District team sent a one-seeded squad from UNC packing, another UNC one-seed avenged their counterparts’ loss in impressive fashion.
Though the Colonials never led, they managed to keep the game close in the opening minutes, battling the Tar Heels to a 10-10 tie after seven minutes of play. After that, the UNC women started pounding the ball inside, and GW could do nothing to stop a steady stream of layups from Erlana Larkins, LaToya Pringle, and Camille Little. With 4:25 left in the first half, the Colonials lagged 19 points behind UNC, and there was little doubting the outcome of the game. With many Colonials in foul trouble, the lead never got back to single digits and GW was unable to repeat their upset of ’97.
