Like a beach-side romance, several local bands are coming to an end this summer. The Sentiment (pictured), who we profiled in a Three Stars piece last summer, said farewell last night at Fort Reno. Let’s French (***) are “being exiled” and are playing their last show on August 17 at the Black Cat. The Hard Tomorrows, who graced the stage of our second Unbuckled show, just called it quits last month. Say it ain’t so!

Let’s French are maintaining their playful attitude and chalking their demise up to issues of nationality:

Mes petites amies. Sacre Bleu! Mon Dieux! We your favorite Frenchies have finalement been tracked down by Etats Unis immigration! Determined to stay on and fight for liberté, égalité, fraternité but doomed to exile a l’etranger from our dearest loved Amerika, We woefully bid farewell au revoir to this star spangled nation of lore that we have called chez moi and splinter into the oblivion that is called abroad, a l’etranger, the rest of the god forsaken world. Whether we shall return rematerialize anew and reclaim our rightful place in the cannon of rock’n’roll revolution remains nebulous.

Their final show — next week on the Black Cat’s main stage, with Greenland and the Nunchucks — promises to be just as wacky: they’re bringing in a fun house photo board. When was the last time you stuck your head through a piece of plywood and did your best fat lady face?

Why is The Sentiment calling it quits? Lead singer Michael Medlock told us, “it just kind of felt right. We’re each moving on to other projects and I think we’ve done all we can in this band.” None of them are abandoning music though; Michael is continuing on in the local rock scene with his new band, The Black & White Jacksons, who are wrapping up a six song EP and playing this Saturday at DC9. He’s also embarking on a side project with guitar player Andrew Diego that’s yet to be named. Katie Thomas, their bass player, is part of Jette Kelly’s new project, who are playing at the Rock & Roll Hotel tonight. Drummer David Smith is starting a new band, Stag Film, with two members of The Dance Party.

Moving away, seeing other people, growing apart — relationships are hard. We understand. But with a little effort and a lotta love, we think the rest of you can pull through. Keep it together people, or you’re gonna break our hearts too. Thanks for the good times you’ve given us guys, you’ll be missed.
