It’s Saturday, and perhaps you’re looking for something to do. Sure, there’s book-reading, nature-appreciation or farmer’s-market-visitation. But that’s all a bit effete, isn’t it? Wouldn’t you prefer to stand around a parking lot under the merciless sun racing cars and occasionally destroying traffic cones? If so, you’re in luck.

The final day of Chevrolet’s Rev It Up event is occurring right now at Fedex Field, and there’s still time for you to go. $25 and a valid driver’s license will get you through the gate, at which point you can listen to professionals explain mostly-incomprehensible racing techniques, take unlimited laps on the practice course, drag race a Corvette, and log two timed runs on the competition track.

The person with the fastest time on the course nationwide (as judged relative to a pace-setting staff driver) wins a new Corvette, making this the largest autocross prize purse in the country. Washington is the last stop on the tour, and we’re told that some folks are even flying in for a final try at that Corvette. But don’t be intimidated by the gearheads chattering about apex points and contact patches: I had no prior experience and still had a surprisingly great time abusing the event’s fleet of Chevy Cobalts when I stopped by yesterday.

The event seemed well-run, without any Chevy accessory hard-sells or exorbitant prices for food and water. You might have to wait in a few lines, but they seemed to move relatively quickly — although things may have been breezier on a Friday than they will be today. One word of warning, though: the event is predictably car-centric, both inside and outside the gate. If you regularly head to Redskins games via the Morgan Boulevard Metro station and want to do the same for Rev It Up, you should steel yourself for a considerably longer walk than you’re used to.
