We were bummed when the U.S. Senate decided in late July that legislation granting the District a voting seat in the U.S. House of Representatives would have to go on summer break with the rest of Congress. But now that they’re all back, so is the push for D.C. voting rights.
According to Congressional Quarterly, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is hoping to bring the legislation — which would grant Republican-heavy Utah an additional seat as a balance to finally giving District residents a vote in the House — to a vote before Columbus Day. Of course, Reid is also looking to pass a whole slew of other bills, including making a dent in the pending appropriations bills.
Last we checked, the legislation had enough votes for a simple majority, but not enough to overcome a predicted filibuster. But the way we see it, the proposal doesn’t have to get any more Republican support. If we can get enough of us to make confusing hand signals in public restrooms to the hold-out senators, maybe enough of them will be forced to resign by their own party (or not?). Watch yourself, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — you’re at the top of our list.
