And a Mercedes.

Three years ago it was their summer. A few weeks ago, it finally became fall for San Diego-based alt-rockers Pinback, with the September 11th release of their fourth full length album and follow up to 2004’s Summer in Abaddon.

Autumn of the Seraphs is both seductive and deceptive, with an opening track that is arguably the weakest on the otherwise memorable album. “From Nothing to Nowhere” doesn’t quite do justice as an introduction to the songs that follow. Each is unique and finely crafted, with a nuanced approach to the dark sounds and contemplative themes. “Good To Sea” is the first to reel the listener in with an extremely catchy and melodic chorus. This is the one that will stick with you long after. That is of course until you become immersed in the dramatic chord progressions of “Subbing for Eden” and the twisting vocal arrangement of “Devil You Know.” Albums that keep you interested until the final track are rare, and Pinback accomplishes this without selling out their sound.

There is also a bonus disc included in the initial print with three previously unreleased studio songs. It may take a few listens to fall in love with the album and to fully appreciate the attention to detail, but Autumn of the Seraphs is a perfect complement to their previous release and well worth the three year wait.

Questions for Pinback’s Rob Crow:

What have been some memorable moments thus far on the fall tour?

Rob: It’s all been fun. Touring with OM and MC Chris has been a blast.
