It’s been a long, frustrating, even humiliating journey together for tax paying D.C. residents, and a man named Roy Pearson. Yesterday, it all finally came to an end, so we thought it only fitting that we should pay tribute to the former administrative law judge who, through suing his dry cleaners first for $65 million over a lost pair of pants, then later $54 million, succeeded in driving international attention to D.C.’s legal system — and not in a good way.
As we put a bow on this epic legal debacle, which led to Pearson both losing his case and his job, as well as the shuttering of Custom Cleaners, we have to wonder, Cui Bono? Who, if anyone, benefited from Pearson’s crazy antics? Flipping through our previous posts and traffic statistics, we have to admit, it’s us! The Pants Suit was a big winner with fans of dumb stories on the Internet, which means we honestly can’t say Roy Pearson never did anything for us. So thanks, Roy. Thanks for the memories. And all the opportunities to find new and exciting images of pants to post alongside our recaps. That was fun, too.
Will this really be the last we hear of Roy Pearson? We’d love to think so, though that certainly seems unlikely. The Post story indicates that the judicial panel that gave him the boot yesterday was careful to come up with a bunch of other reasons to fire him besides the pants case, but surely we have to expect he’ll file a wrongful termination suit — not to mention that looming appeal of the original case.
