District CFO Natwar Gandhi sent out a press release announcing the appointment of Stephen Cordi, a former deputy comptroller for the state of Maryland, as the new director of the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue. Cordi takes the job vacated by Sherryl Hobbs Newman after she was fired in the wake of the biggest city government embezzlement scandal in history.
Here’s what the Post says about Cordi, who has been serving as an attorney at Ober|Kaler since retiring from the comptroller’s office:
While with the Maryland comptroller’s office, Cordi helped set up the Accenture integrated tax system, also used by the District. He litigated contested tax cases and helped in returns processing, taxpayer service, revenue accounting and case management, according to a biography released by Gandhi’s office.
Cordi earned a bachelor’s degree from Haverford College, a law degree from Georgetown Law Center and a master’s in liberal arts from Johns Hopkins University.
Cordi was also involved in Maryland’s effort to work with the federal government to root out illegal tax shelters, and of course, was sometimes a pawn in boss William Donald Schaefer‘s attempts to thumb his nose at former Gov. Parris N. Glendening by sending Cordi in his place to important state events.
