Well, who saw that coming? The Terrapins (12-7, 2-2 ACC) stunned the nation last Saturday by defeating the (now former) top team in the country, North Carolina, 82-80 in an instant classic in front of a nationally televised audience. And this was at The Dean Dome, no less. Gary Williams orchestrated one of his finest coaching jobs, as the future Hall of Famer guided his team to the program’s now sixth victory over a #1 ranked team. The turnovers were kept to a minimum and the Terps’ defense limited All-American center Tyler Hansbrough to a UNC team-high 17 points. Who is this team, and can they continue the momentum when they face the reviled Blue Devils this Sunday?
Forward James Gist was named ACC Player of the Week after having a monster game at Chapel Hill. The Maryland senior’s double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds were instrumental in the Terps victory over the Tar Heels. Center Bambale “Boom” Osby, made the game winning lay-up with 21.6 seconds remaining on the clock. UNC (18-1, 3-1) had a chance for the win but Hansbrough’s 3-pointer clanked on the rim as time expired, which prompted a jubilant celebration from the Maryland players. A lot of the credit, however, has to be given out to sophomore point guard Greivis Vasquez. The Venezuelan and former Montrose Christian standout dished out 11 dimes and hit some pivotal free-throws down the stretch to keep the game in reach for the Terps.
