Last night’s game against Virginia Tech (15-11, 6-6 ACC) was a pivotal one for the Maryland Terrapins (17-10, 7-5 ACC). It was an opportunity for the recently resurgent Terps to lock up an important home victory, notch another win in their ACC record, and improve their RPI. Prior to last night, Maryland would’ve been considered a lock for the NCAA Tournament (most pollsters had them penciled in as a #9 seed). Now, after a disastrous loss to Virginia Tech at the Comcast Center, the Terrapins are back on the bubble. With three out of the four remaining games on the road, the margin of error for Maryland is extremely thin. Can Maryland rebound this Saturday at Miami?
Last night’s loss to the Hokies, 69-65, couldn’t have come at a worst time for Maryland. The Terrapins led nearly the entire game but fell behind in the last few minutes when Tech went on an 8-0 run. Hokies A.D. Vasallo and Hank Thorns hit successive 3-pointers towards the end of the game and Maryland was unable to respond. The Terps bench clearly had its worst game of the season as not a single substitute was able to put up any numbers on the box score. Greivis Vasquez and Bambale Osby proved to be the only productive players in the lineup, while the rest of the Maryland starters struggled throughout the entire night. Now tied for third with Clemson in the conference standings, the Terrapins travel to Miami this Saturday to face the Hurricanes, a team which beat #4 Duke last night for the first time in 45 years.
Mazel Tov, Brenda!
Women’s coach Brenda Frese was unable to make the trip to Durham last Sunday to watch her team sweep Duke for the first time in 15 years. The reason? She delivered twin boys! The #4 Maryland women (27-2, 11-1 ACC) play their final home game of the season this Sunday when the Terps take on Florida State at 2 p.m. in College Park for Senior Day. Senior Crystal Langhorne will have her jersey honored after the game to commemorate her outstanding career as a Terrapin.
