Good morning, Washington. Today brings good news for fans of public transportation (we’re looking at you, editor-emeritus Ryan). First, the Post is reporting that the Dulles Metro extension is back from the grave thanks to a soon-to-be-announced reversal by the Federal Transit Administration that will extend funding to the project. Second, and perhaps less excitingly, Governor Kaine is considering raising Virginia’s gas tax, a move that would both encourage use of public transportation and provide the money needed to keep the system running.
School Shooting Remains Baffling: For now, the motive behind yesterday’s shooting at a Northeast vocational school remains opaque, as the Post explains. One thing that is clear: it could have been much worse. Alleged gunman Wesley Johnson’s two victims are both expected to survive, and the gunman himself seems to have been quite lucky, having been apprehended without injury despite opening fire on police officers.
Pr. Williams County Changes Immigration Policy: The county has definitely changed their policy regarding when the immigration status of suspects detained by police can be checked — but it’s not clear whether the new policy is more or less tough than the one that preceded it. NBC4 says that a suspect’s immigration status can now only be checked after an arrest, and that previously the change police could check the status of anyone they stopped. But the Washington Times says that the change actually makes the policy more aggressive, and that before now police intent on checking immigration status “needed probable cause to think the person was in the country illegally.” We have no idea who’s right, but given the Times’ horrible popup ads we’re inclined to give NBC4 the benefit of the doubt (the Post agrees).
