Good morning, Washington. Did you hear the news? That’s right: there’s been a Democratic primary! Hurrah! Yup, we just can’t get enough of ’em. Hillary Clinton won Kentucky, Barack Obama won Oregon and although Obama is now claiming the majority of pledged delegates, it’s still not over. Presumably they’ll eventually run out of states, but if you have a better suggestion for how to end this we’re all ears.
Rhee Proposes Ending Teacher Seniority: Word has leaked out of the ongoing contract negotiations between the city’s government and teacher union and, according to the Post, Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee is trying to eliminate the teacher seniority system. It sounds like she’s going to succeed, too, with the quoted source indicating that the union thinks its position is weak. Rhee maintains that eliminating seniority would make it easier to attract talented new hires and would allow for more flexibility in staffing decisions.
Va. Late-term Abortion Ban Declared Unconstitutional: The Post, first via its Virginia Politics Blog and now its front page, reports that a federal court has struck down the state’s 2003 ban on abortions near the end of a pregnancy. The ban was initially opposed by then-Governor Mark Warner due to its omission of an exception to protect the mother’s health, but ultimately passed via a legislative override. But that omitted exception resulted in the law being struck down in 2005; yesterday’s decision, prompted by a new federal law, affirmed that ruling. Some supporters of the bill are now pledging to take the case to the Supreme Court.
