Last week, we told you that the city’s new World Team Tennis franchise, the Washington Kastles, asked you to come up with a name for one of their mascots. We are sorry, but perhaps not surprised, to disappoint DCist commenters with the news that Ballsy the Ball, Butterball, Deuce, Goofball, Meaty, Shuttle Cock, and my personal favorite, Dingle, were not chosen. According to the team’s Web site, the winning suggestion was Topspin. If you submitted a name and feel you were robbed, let us know in the comments.
In other Kastles news, Friday night’s second home game, against the New York Buzz, found the team able to even things out with a win after falling to the Buzz in New York two nights before. This was the first match the Kastles played without star Serena Williams, and was also the match mouthy Justin Gimelstob sat out to serve his one game suspension due to comments he made about Anna Kournikova and other female players on the radio a few weeks ago. Robby Ginepri filled in for Gimelstob.
The Kastles are currently 3rd in the Eastern conference, having won four matches and lost three, behind the Buzz and the New York Sportimes. The Sportimes come to town Tuesday night for a match against the Kastles which will feature John McEnroe. You can buy tickets here.
