The Washington Kastles rallied from an early deficit Tuesday night to defeat the visiting New York Sportimes and tennis legend John McEnroe in front of a capacity crowd at Kastles Stadium at CityCenter DC. The women’s doubles team of Mashona Washington and Sacha Jones won their match 5 games to 1 to set up a super-tiebreaker to decide the match, which they won 7-5.
The Sportimes took an early 10 games to 2 lead after the mixed doubles and women’s singles, leading into the night’s featured events, the men’s singles and doubles, both of which featured the 49 year-old McEnroe. Johnny Mac actually lost both events but he was able to provide the audience with the occasional glimpse of his still evident on-court artistry, as well as his fiery temper. He had trouble matching the pace of 22-year-old Scott Oudsma in the singles, and his doubles partner Brian Wilson disproved Peter Fleming’s famous theory that “the best doubles team in the world is John McEnore and whoever he is playing with.” McEnroe also did his part to play up to the crowd’s expectations, temper-wise. He didn’t hesitate to let the on-court camera men know they were moving around too much for his liking during singles play. He also had words for Washington after a ball she hit in frustration after losing her singles match hit someone in the Sportimes huddle. Apparently McEnroe didn’t think very highly of that, and let her know.
