Good morning, Washington. What happens when the District agency you run is the subject of daily headlines questioning the competence and veracity of your staff? You get the boot. Sharlynn Bobo, director of the city’s troubled Child and Family Services Agency, resigned yesterday. The announcement came via a press release from the Mayor’s office at around 9:45 p.m. last night — presumably there was no typical Fenty-style press conference this morning because the administration doesn’t want to have to rehash all the events, including the deaths of several children who were reported to the agency for neglect, that led up to this leadership change. Dr. Roque Gerald has been named interim director.
Get Your Gun: So the District began accepting applications for gun registration this morning. Whether you’re trying to register a new handgun or an old illegal one during the 180-day amnesty period, the registration process will likely take weeks, if not months, to complete. Best gun registration tidbit of the morning comes from WUSA: Dick Heller, the man who brought the lawsuit against the District’s handgun ban, was among the first in line this morning to register a gun, but he was denied, apparently because the style of semi-automatic weapon he wanted to register is not allowed under the city’s strict rules. What are the odds Heller is feeling litigious all over again this morning?
D.C. Could Keep Youth Offenders Out of Adult Jail: The Examiner digs in to Council members Phil Mendelson and Tommy Wells’s bill that would allow youth offenders in the District to stay out of adult facilities. The argument that time spent in adult jails can too often lead kids who might be saved to turn in to more hardened criminals is compelling.
Briefly Noted: Obama adds 20 offices in Virginia … Body found in Fairfax County woods may be that of missing Burke man … Police search for suspect from Silver Spring in child rape.
This Day in DCist: Last year Deputy Mayor for Education Victor Reinoso was having a bad week, and the year before that we eulogized the old Wilson Bridge.
