SATURDAY:
>> It’s been a rough summer for some of the Mid-City boutiques that participate in the annual Dog Days of Summer Sidewalk sale, going on today and Sunday along U Street NW, 14th Street NW, and beyond. Recently shuttered stores include Wild Women Wear Red, Pink November, and now Pop is having its very final weekend during the event. On the bright side, the economic uncertainty means this is an ideal time to find amazing bargains. Everything at Pop is 50 to 75 percent off all weekend, and they’re having a little going out of business party at 7 p.m. tonight that will include drinks and music. Check out the lengthy, full list of participating businesses in the sidewalk sale, and take advantage of the D.C. sales tax holiday starting this weekend — all clothing, accessories, shoes, and back-to-school purchases of under $100 will be tax free starting Saturday and going through Aug. 10.
>> BloomBars in Columbia Heights hosts The Makepeace Brothers at 9 p.m. for a measly $5 donation.
>> Irvine Contemporary opens their annual MFA graduate show, Introductions4, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. They chose the work of nine artists out of 250 submissions, with the help of a panel of distinguished D.C. art collectors. We’re especially intrigued by the works of Becky Alphrin and Jimmy Joe Roche, who both use sculpture to play with ideas of society and culture; Alphrin through minimalist architectural sculptures and Roche with intricate and colorful paper cut-outs.
>> The Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia will play host to headliner Jill Scott as well as The Roots, Estelle, and the Godfather, Chuck Brown. $41-$74, 6 p.m.
>> Check out our full preview of CorbinDances dance troupe, which will perform tonight and Sunday evening at Dance Place. Tickets are available online or by calling (202) 269-1600.
>> Tickets are still available for to see We Are Scientists, Oxford Collapse and Apache Beat at the Black Cat. $15, 9 p.m.
>> Eternally cool Aimee Mann is at the 9:30 Club. L.A.’s The Submarines open. $35, 8 p.m.
>> Don’t miss our film picks for the week, including John Carpenter’s They Live at the AFI Silver Theater at 11:45 p.m.
SUNDAY:
