FRIDAY:

>> Bryan Scary and the Shedding Tears headline a 4-band bill at the Black Cat. Former Three Stars pop classicists The Beanstalk Library, The Jet Age and Kitty Hawk all open. All for only $10, Doors at 9 p.m.

>> Still in his early 20s, trumpeter and New Orleans native Christian Scott is considered the latest of the Crescent City’s horn blowers whose lineage started with the legendary King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and has continued with such marquee trumpeters as Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton. He will be making his area debut as a bandleader tonight and Saturday at the historic Bohemian Caverns, in support of his electric recent release, Anthem. Tickets to the 9 and 11 p.m. sets are $20.

>> Consult our film picks of the week, including A Dandy in Aspic, a Cold War spy thriller starring Laurence Harvey, Mia Farrow and Peter Cook, tonight at 7 p.m. at the Library of Congress’ Mary Pickford Theater.

>> Artist J.J. McCracken will perform at Project 4 tonight as part of the Living Sculpture show, which incorporates figures, spheres, and lots of clay in a way that ponders expectations and movement in life. See one of two performances tonight, 7 p.m. or 8:15 p.m. This event was Thursday night, but is happening again next Friday.

>> Legendary vibraphonist Roy Ayers returns to the District for an outdoor show at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre in Rock Creek Park. $23, 7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY:

>> Volunteer at the annual DCPS Beautification Day. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., help “spruce up” DC public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school. Some of the tasks include: picking up trash, planting flowers, and painting exterior doors. Follow this link to register.

>> Take advantage of the August doldrums by visiting the Corcoran while they’re waiving their admission fee, now until September 3. Head over to see, among other things, Elena Del Rivero’s fantastic Home Suite sculptures.

>> “Still Black, Still Proud…The African Tribute to James Brown” will feature African musical interpretation of the Godfather of Soul’s music. Along with some of Brown’s original musicians, Wunmi, Cheikh Lo, and several other artists will be at the 9:30 Club. $25, 8 p.m.

>> Put on your dancing shoes for the 8th Anniversary of Bliss at the Black Cat. Three Stars alum DJ Will Eastman will be joined by DJ Pogo and Wallpaper, making a special live performance. $10, 9:30 p.m.

>> Celebrate Ben’s Chili Bowl’s 50th Anniversary with a concert at the 9:30 Club, featuring a go-go heavy slate with Trouble Funk, E.U., and Mambo Sauce. Free, 1 p.m.
