Bear blogging is clearly the it-trend of summer 2008. So, lucky for us, an adorable baby bear story unfolded in our own back yard yesterday. A 30-pound black bear cub climbed a tree in a heavily populated Frederick, MD neighborhood yesterday, where he hung around for almost 5 hours. NBC4 has video of him being generally adorable and licking a lot. He finally came down of his own accord, spotted an apple in the yard nearby, and helped himself to a snack. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) considered tranquilizing the bear to get him down, but since he was 60+ feet off the ground, and sooooooooo cute, they just waited it out till he was good and ready. DNR let the bear make his own decisions because, as a “teenage bear,” he’s got to learn things on his own. And, his mom probably already kicked him out of the den so she could get busy and make more cuddly baby bears. DNR ultimately caged the cub and returned it to the wild.
