Friday:
>> Last week we told you about the Living Sculpture performance by J.J. McCracken at Project 4. A commenter heeded our recommendation and told us it was “Really great. I felt like I was on a different planet.” Make sure you get there for the last performance, tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday:
>> The 3rd Annual Planet Arlington World Music Festival takes place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Rosslyn. the event will feature the Congolese-Angolan salsa icon Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca (4 – 5:15 pm), China’s Yang Ying (5:45 – 6:45 pm), “the Jimi Hendrix of the erhu”, Lebanese vocalist Tania Saleh (7:15 – 8:15 pm), and Solas (8:45 – 10 pm), the most acclaimed Celtic band to originate in the United States. Solas will be hosting a CD release party the previous night. The festival is free and open to the public.
>> The annual Glen Echo Art Show takes place this weekend, in their historic Spanish Ballroom. Check out tons of art for sale, and stay for the Irish music and dance performances. If you haven’t been to Glen Echo, it’s worth the trip just to see the old school (and very photogenic) kids park. Free, open noon to 6 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
>> As we told you in Popcorn & Candy, AFI is playing Reds, Warren Beatty’s career peak film about John Reed, a young American writer who wrote a first-hand account of the Russian Revolution, in which he got caught up over the course of a couple of visits to Russia during the war. Catch a matinee at 12:30 Saturday.
>> D.C. is the venue for a number of protests and marches, but this is the first time the “Million DJ March” has occurred. Meant to highlight the role DJs play in the music world, the show will take place on The Mall. Slated to appear are KRS-One, Kia Shine, and many others. Free, 11 a.m.
Sunday:
>> Enjoy tunes from the National Symphony Orchestra at the 2008 Labor Day Concert, part of the Kennedy Center Prelude Festival, which runs through October 8 to kick-off the new performing arts season. The concert is free and takes place on the West lawn of the U.S. Capitol. 8 p.m.
>> We’ve given them Three Stars, followed them to Texas and now that we’ve learned the words to all of their songs Pash has come up with some new material that they’ll be debuting at Iota. It seems somewhat fitting that the producer of their last two albums, Jason Caddell, will be celebrating this debut with them as his band, Poor But Sexy, opens. 8:30 p.m., $10.
Monday:
>> It’s a holiday, so fire up the grill, spray on some Off!, and maybe take in a parade. Enjoy the long weekend, folks.
