Happy Halloween, Washington! We suspect many of you will be headed out early today to dress up the tots and head out on the quest for candy, so expect rush hour to begin earlier than usual today. If you plan on driving through Georgetown after 6 p.m., WTOP has a long list of road closures for tonight. Meanwhile, the Washington Post has the breaking news that people in D.C. like dressing up as political figures (a story also featuring our new music writer, Dave Weigel, and his costume). Luckily, it looks to be not terrible weather for those of you going “naughty” tonight — and if you plan to drink, SoberRide is providing free cab rides again up to $50 between 10 p.m. tonight and 6 a.m. tomorrow, so put this number in your phone now: 1-800-200-TAXI.
Arrest Finally Made in 2006 Dupont Killing: It looks like the first official steps are being taken in the investigation of Robert Wone’s death. The story that followed the 32-year-old lawyer’s slaying was full of rumors about the three people living in the house Wone was crashing in for the night, possible intruder stories, and even claims of conspiracy, but no definitive evidence was ever found. The Post is reporting, however, that housemate Dylan Ward — who moved to Florida shortly after the killing — was arrested on Wednesday in Dade County under obstruction of justice charges. Though no specifics have been released, the police have always claimed that the housemates may have altered the scene and were generally unwilling to help in the investigation.
Maybe They Thought it Was A Halloween Prank?: In, we suppose, proper gruesome Halloween news, we found the story somewhat buried in the Post today that a class of 70 high school juniors stumbled upon a dead body in the Anacostia River, as they were participating in a community clean-up project. The head of the kids’ school said, “They handled it very well.” No obvious cause of death was found on the body of the adult male, though a drug overdose is suspected.
Surprise, Surprise; Voting is Soaring: It’s all over the news that early voting is extremely popular this year. Fox5 is reporting that more than 300,000 Virginians have turned in absentee ballots already. 300,000! In D.C., people are waiting two-hours in lines to vote early, according to the Washington Times. (I don’t know about you guys, but I’m hoping this means a swift voting process when the rest of us go to the polls on election day.) Meanwhile, the NAACP and and the Virginia Republican party are locked in battle over extended voting hours.
In Brief: Finishing touches going on the Wilson Bridge … A pretty gross story about the GWU pool … Prelim report released about the MedEvac chopper that crashed last month.
This Day in DCist: Last year we reported on a “hug-in” at Rite-Aid and thought we were finally saying good-bye to Pants Pearson, in 2006 we had the scoop on Beck’s secret Black Cat backstage show, and in 2005 we wondered if some strange “outing” among neighbors was going too far.
