Steve Croft interviewed Barack and Michelle Obama last night on 60 Minutes about their transition as a family into the White House. Among some great tidbits like that Michelle refused to sleep in the crappy 1-bedroom D.C. apartment that the President-Elect used during his time in the Senate (she said it reminded her of the apartment he lived in when they first started dating), the future first lady signaled that she and her husband intend to get involved in local issues here in the city. It’s at around the 14 minute mark in the video above (she also dodged a question about whether she’s seriously considering a public school for the girls).
Michelle Obama: Both Barack and I believe we can have an impact in the D.C. area, in terms of making sure we’re contributing to the community that we immediately live in — that’s always been something that we try to do whether it’s in our own neighborhoods or in the schools that we’ve attended. So there’s plenty to do.
Steve Kroft: Did you seriously consider sending the girls to public school?
Michelle Obama: You know, we’re still in the process of figuring out that transition, and what we have asked people to understand is that the decision that we make will be based on the best interests of the girls. We haven’t made that decision yet. We want that to be a personal process. And people have been really good about respecting that.
D.C. residents remember when then-President-elect Bill Clinton took a walk along Georgia Avenue in 1992, and then proceeded to sort of not really care that much about the city. With the Obamas, there’s certainly a sense right now that they are more likely to follow through with these kinds of promises, but of course only time will tell.
What local issues would you most like to see the Obamas focus on? Education seems like it would be the most natural choice.
