To mark the recent anniversary of Redskins safety Sean Taylor’s murder, 93.9 WKYS brought together several local hip hop and R&B talents to collaborate on a tribute song. The radio station’s afternoon drivetime DJ, EZ Street said, “The idea for doing this song is simple. To honor # 21 Sean and to send a message that to the community that we must never forget that there is still much work to do stop the violence in our community. Sean’s tragic death acts a reminder.”
Written by Raheem DeVaughn, the tribute brings together Anwan Glover (aka Big G, aka Slim Charles from The Wire), Wale (who, according to something we heard on the radio last night but can’t confirm anywhere else, just signed with Jay-Z’s Rock-a-fella Records), Miss Kim and Jamil “Face” Johnson. Offensive Tackle Chris Samuels appears in the video, but sadly never adds his lovely baritone voice to the track. (Seriously, have you guys heard Chris Samuels talk? I can’t get enough of that guy’s voice. I watch those Comcast Redskins shows on Saturdays largely for that reason. And because I’m a Redskins geek.)
We wonder though, is this tribute a bit heavy handed? You won’t find much bigger ‘Skins fans than some of us on the DCist staff, but comparing Taylor to Obama? Really? He hit really hard, but that’s not quite the same as being elected the first black president. Regardless, Taylor was an incredible player, and his death was a tragedy. The league, the team and the city certainly miss him. All in all, this is a pretty good statement to remember him by. That, or this.
H/T to Mister Irrelevant.
