Good morning, Washington. W. Mark Felt, associate director of the FBI during the Watergate scandal and the man who in 2005 was revealed to have been the Washington Post’s “Deep Throat” source, died yesterday at the age of 95. The Post has a lengthy obit.

More Budget Shortfalls Facing the District: Despite making cuts earlier this fall to address an estimated $131 million budget gap, D.C. officials are expected to announce that the city is facing a brand new budget shortfall of $127 million. There’s a press conference scheduled for noon today, but we can surely expect additional cuts across the city.

Child Welfare Backlog Trimmed: In some more upbeat news out of District government, Mayor Fenty yesterday announced that the city’s Child and Family Services Agency had successfully cut its backlog of cases from a high 1,750 earlier this year to 92. The District had been required to reduce the backlog to below 100 cases by Dec. 31 under a court agreement.
