DCist’s guide to lectures and discussions in the D.C. area
As you can imagine, there aren’t a whole lot of lectures going on this week, unless you count those given by family members who think you’re not fulfilling their dreams correctly. Sadly, none of your disappointed parents sent us press releases, so we’re not sure when those are scheduled.
Museums:
If you’ve taken off work this week, it’s a good time to check out the area’s museums, which have a number of daytime talks and tours scheduled.
>> The National Gallery of Art is holding their regularly scheduled gallery talks and guided tours all week, with the exception of Christmas Day. Tours start at 10:30 a.m. and run until 3:30 p.m., and explore their collections, including a tour on art from 1900 to the present, the Italian Renaissance, Pompeii, and the French Collection. At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, they are giving a special talk on The Christmas Story in Art, and at 12:30 p.m., you can join them for a guided tour titled, Points of View: The Painter’s Choices. >> Friday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the National Museum of the American Indian is holding Father & Son Storytelling with Owen Lyle James and Lyle James in the third floor resource center. The Jameses are from Alaska’s Kake Tribe, and will be telling “clan stories which are appropriate for all ages—stories of ‘long ago events’ with moral messages such as treating food respectfully and listening to elders.”
>> At 11 a.m. on Saturday, the Anacostia Community Museum is hosting Kwanzaa Stories with Baba-C and Tomorrow’s Voices. This family-friendly event will discuss the seven principles of Kwanzaa “through interactive storytelling, narratives, and call-and-response.” For required reservations, call 202.633.4844.
>> The National Air and Space Museum actually has a few book events planned this week. On Friday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., author Robert F. Door will be at the Udvar-Hazy Center for a signing of his book, Air Force One. The same author will be at the Center on Saturday at the same time as well, but this time he’ll be signing Hell Hawks!: The Untold Story of the American Fliers Who Savaged Hitler’s Wehrmacht. Admission to both events is free.
