A passenger has been struck at the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station. DCist has received several reports of stalled trains due to the struck passenger at the already-packed station; Gallery Place Metro is now totally closed. No word on either the person’s identity or their condition, but obviously, this will cause some serious delays for those who are currently riding or waiting to board trains on the Red Line. UPDATE from WMATA: Metro confirms that a passenger was struck at Gallery Place-Chinatown. Red Line trains are turning back at Farragut North and Judiciary Square Metrorail stations. Riders can expect major delays while emergency personnel respond to the scene.

There is no Red Line train service at Metro Center or Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail stations. People should exit at Judiciary Square and Farragut North to walk to the National Mall.

The train was headed in the direction of Glenmont when it reportedly struck the individual at 9:25 a.m. Police are on the scene investigating the incident.

UPDATE (10:14 a.m.): WMATA reports that the person struck was a woman who somehow ended up on the tracks. The woman was transported to an area hospital. WTOP also reports that the 68-year-old is still alive. Police are still investigating exactly how the woman fell off the platform.

UPDATE (10:45 a.m.): We’re hearing that Metro service in the direction of Glenmont is back up and running, but one has to imagine that the residual delays will be quite taxing for those remaining in transit.

UPDATE (11:18 a.m.): According to Metro, good news — the woman, previously believed to have been struck by an oncoming car, “fell on the tracks but was not hit by an approaching Red Line train.” The woman has “non life threatening injuries.”
