If District pols know two things, it’s that Mayor Adrian Fenty is an accomplished cyclist and an accomplished fundraiser. It’s really not a good idea to challenge him at either.

The City Paper’s Mike DeBonis reported yesterday that Mayor Fenty has already raised over $2 million for his coming re-election campaign, already roughly half of what he spent during his entire 2006 campaign. Considering that the District’s next mayoral election isn’t until late 2010, and that his re-election campaign is but three months old, the size of Fenty’s war chest is both impressive and intimidating. Fenty’s money has come from 2,126 individual donors, 750 of which gave the $2,000 limit. Of the $2 million raised, only $90,000 has actually been spent.

It’s too early to say who will decide to challenge Fenty, but this fundraising report will surely put some extra fear into those who have been considering it. One oft-cited potential challenger, D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray, must see any chance he might have of ousting the mayor as a serious longshot at this point.
